How to make an apple pie

Apple pie is a popular dessert enjoyed by many, whether during holidays, special events, or simply to savor the joy of homemade treats. In this article, we will guide you through the steps to make a delicious apple pie.

The ingredients you will need include eight cups of cooking apples (peeled, cored, and sliced thin), 1/3 cup packed brown sugar, 1/3 cup white sugar, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons butter (either dairy or plant-based), plus additional milk, sugar, and cinnamon for topping the pie.

Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F). In a small bowl, use a sifter to combine the sugars, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt evenly. Place the apple slices in a large bowl and gently toss with a spatula to coat them in the mixture, letting them cool in room temperature for about 10 minutes until juices are released. For exact ingredient amounts, use measuring cups and a scale to ensure accuracy.

Line a 25 cm (10-inch) pie dish with the pie crust, leaving about 1 cm of dough hanging over the edge. Use a pastry cutter to cut any excess dough. Add the apple mixture to the pie crust and top with some butter. Moisten the edge of the bottom crust, then place the top crust over the filling, leaving about 2.5 cm of overhang. Tuck the overhanging dough under the bottom crust, pressing to seal, and crimp the edges. For a decorative finish, use pie molds or cut slits in the top crust with a knife to allow steam out. Brush the top crust with milk and sprinkle with sugar.

Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and juices bubble through the slits. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil. Once baked, allow the pie to cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Some Tips for Perfect Apple Pie:
1. Place a layer of aluminum foil on the oven rack below the pie to catch any drippings.
2. Consider using a lattice crust or streusel topping for variety.
3. For a softer texture, bake the pie at a lower temperature, like 180°C (350°F), for about an hour.
4. Serve your apple pie warm with a whisked portion of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra taste.
