The smell of warm apples and cinnamon drifting from the oven. That’s how I remember my mom’s apple pie—golden crust, soft fruit, just the right touch of sweetness. It wasn’t just dessert, it was love you could taste.
This Mother’s Day, why not bring back that feeling with a homemade apple pie of your own? Whether you're baking for your mom or with her, it's a beautiful way to say thank you. And with the right tools, it’s easier than you think.
Apple Pie Recipe (for a 30cm pie pan)
For the filling:
1 kg apples (about 650g peeled and diced)
5g butter
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons cornstarch
100ml water
For the crust:
300g all-purpose flour
200g cold butter, cut into chunks
100g sugar
1 cold egg
👩🍳 How to Make It:
1. Start with the filling:
Peel and chop apples into small cubes. Cook in a pan with melted butter until they begin to soften.
2. Add flavor:
Stir in sugar and cinnamon. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes until the apples are tender but still hold their shape.
3. Thicken it up:
Add a cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) and simmer until thick. Let it cool completely.
4. Now, the crust:
Mix flour, sugar, cold butter, and egg. Use your hands to form a soft dough. Don’t overmix—keep the butter cold for a flaky crust. Chill for 30 minutes.
5. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F):
Roll out the dough between two sheets of parchment and press into your pie pan. Trim the edges.
6. Bake the base:
Pop it into the oven for 25 minutes to pre-bake the bottom crust.
7. Add filling:
Spoon in the cooled apple mixture evenly.
8. Top it off:
Roll out the rest of the dough, slice into strips, and weave into a lattice top. Brush with egg wash.
9. Bake again:
Back into the oven for 30 minutes until golden brown.
10. Serve warm:
And if you really want to spoil Mom? Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side.
A Few Tips:
Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor (like Granny Smith + Honeycrisp).
Cold ingredients make a better crust—don’t skip the chilling step.
Don’t overwork the dough. A light touch keeps it flaky.
If you’re using a metal pan, reduce bake time slightly—it heats faster.
Best enjoyed warm!
